The Green Tree Tavern
Ste. Genevieve County MO

Janis-Ziegler House aka Green Tree Tavern St. Marys Road, just south of South Gabouri Creek
In 1807 the first meeting of Freemasons was held here. Limestone basement walls are 2 ft thick.
By looking at the pictures you can imagine the men talking and laughing on the gallery as they carved their names in the posts. After too many drinks it was not uncommon for them to take their frolicking into the streets. In front of the tavern is what seems to be a stone walkway but is actually the top of the old retaining wall. The street was raised about 5 feet years ago.
The current owner has the original posts in the basement and is restoring the tavern to ca. 1790. (TDR)
